Become a Tutor

Our tutor coordinator will meet with all interested tutors to confirm suitability. As part of this process, we ask for

• A criminal record check

• Two references

• A signed tutor agreement, which includes a confidentiality agreement

We also ask prospective tutors to complete our training series, which is done virtually and takes between 6-7 hours. 

We provide training and support throughout every step of your tutoring journey. 

Our onboarding process includes 13 training modules on different topics relevant to adult literacy. This is mandatory for all tutors. We also offer regular continuing development sessions and resources, covering a range of topics from mental health in learning to the use of AI in tutoring. 

Nope! We don't required our tutors to have any prior experience - just an openness to learn and a heart for helping. Learners have often expressed that what they appreciate most is the patience and compassion of their tutor, not any fancy qualifications.

The time committment can vary depending on how much time you have to give. Generally, we ask that you meet with your learner once a week, for an hour to hour and a half. 

We also ask you spend some time before the session prepping for the lesson so you are prepared when you meet your learner. 

On average, this means we ask for a minimum commitment of 2-3 hours per week.  

This is entirely dependent on your schedule and your learners schedule. We have pairs that meet during the daytime, evenings, and on weekends. 

Most tutor/learner pairs make use of the public library space for their meetings, but some prefer coffee shops or other community centres. Tutors and learners always meet in a third-party location (i.e., do not meet in their respective homes). 

When matching a tutor and a learner, we take multiple factors into account, including:

• Schedule and availability

• Personality

• Location

• Tutoring Interests (i.e., what material are you comfortable working with)

Tutors are given the opportunity to ask questions about their potential learner before the first match meeting and we can address any concerns before matching goes forward! 

The learning goals and appropriate resources are decided through collaboration with the learner, tutor, and tutor coordinator. Everyone's goals and learning styles are unique, and we tailor our resources to those individual needs. 

We like to allow our volunteer tutors to have flexibility in their tutoring approach and many incorporate creative ideas and resources that work perfectly for their situation! But if ever in doubt, our tutor coordinator is available to help with lesson plans, ideas, and resources. 

How much your incorporate technology into your sessions is mostly up to you! 

Our training is done on the computer and via zoom and we do ask tutors to report their volunteer hours through a website. Other than that, you are free to use online resources, video conferencing software, etc. or to limit technology and use paper and pen. 

Our tutor coordinator is here to provide support and troubleshooting with any challenges that may arise!
