Founded in 1977, READ Moncton is a community-based, registered non-profit organization committed to improving adult literacy in Moncton and the surrounding areas of southeastern New Brunswick through free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring. From our earliest days, we have been guided by the belief that literacy is a basic right that is essential to personal confidence, opportunity, and community wellbeing. READ Moncton is an affiliated council of READ NB (formerly Laubach Literacy New Brunswick), part of a provincial network of volunteer literacy councils.
Championing Literacy: The Legacy of Peter Sawyer
A pivotal figure in READ Moncton’s story is Peter Sawyer, whose decades-long dedication helped shape adult literacy support in New Brunswick. Peter was one of the founding members of the Moncton Regional Learning Council and he served as its President for many years.
Peter’s commitment extended beyond local leadership. He was a long-time volunteer tutor and tireless literacy advocate throughout the province, serving in key roles with the provincial literacy network (Laubach Literacy New Brunswick/READ NB).
His work garnered recognition at provincial and national levels. In 1992, Laubach Literacy Canada presented him with its Award of Excellence for outstanding service in adult literacy. Later, in 2013, he became the first recipient of the Outstanding Adult Literacy Tutor Award from the Literacy Coalition of New Brunswick - a testament to his profound impact as a tutor and mentor.
Peter’s leadership, optimism and genuine belief in the power of literacy helped strengthen not only READ Moncton but adult literacy efforts throughout New Brunswick, inspiring volunteers and learners alike.
Growing Our Impact
Since those early years, our services have continued to evolve in response to community needs. In addition to foundational reading and writing tutoring, many learners work toward goals such as obtaining a education credentials, improving workplace or digital skills, or strengthening English language abilities. The heart of our work - providing respectful, personalized literacy support - remains unchanged.
Although our official charitable name is The Moncton Regional Learning Council Inc., for most learners, volunteers and supporters we are simply READ Moncton: a community rooted in service, empowerment and the belief that one-on-one tutoring can transform lives
